Dickens Village Comes to Life

Kernels of Gold

Art and architecture, concerts and candles, plays and parades mark the launch of the Dickens Victorian Village in downtown Cambridge, Ohio, open daily from November through January 15, 2007. In addition to the 40 displays of lifelike figures representing scenes from Victorian society at the antique lampposts on Wheeling Avenue, a host of activities are scheduled for visitors to enjoy.
The Dickens Victorian Village scenes include life-sized, hand-made mannequins wearing authentic vintage clothing. The faces for each character have been individually sculpted and painted by members of the Eastern Ohio Art Guild.

The 40 displays include engaging depictions of Dickens-era scenes with 105 figures such as Tom Cratchit and Tiny Tim, the town crier, carolers, a bucket brigade, lamplighters, school children, street peddlers, and Father Christmas.

The public celebration to kick off the Village opening on November 25, 2006, will feature the lighting of the courthouse, a candlelight ceremony, the Dickens of a Christmas holiday parade, a visit from Father Christmas and, at 8 pm, the Cambridge Band Christmas Concert at the Scottish Rite Theater, 941 Wheeling Ave.

Special events for the season include the Byesville Scenic Railway “Spirit Of Christmas” train ride on December 2, 3 and 9, Cambridge Singers holiday concerts; high tea at the Colonel Taylor Inn; special Old English era holiday dinners; six performances of “A Christmas Carol” at the Cambridge Performing Arts Center; National Museum of Cambridge Glass tours; a performance of “Messiah” by the Southeastern Ohio Symphony Orchestra; the holiday tour of homes; New Year’s Eve Gospel Sing; downtown shopping, and visits with Father Christmas, December 2 and 9, from 11 am. to 2 pm and 4 to 6 pm.

Forty-five local dancers in jazz, tap, and ballet, plus singers, musicians, and actors from the Cambridge area will perform two acts: “Christmas Past” and “Christmas Present for “The Spirit of Christmas” music and dance show, Friday, Nov. 24, 2006 at 8 pm and Sunday, Nov. 26 at 2 pm at the Pritchard Laughlin Civic Center, west of Cambridge. Scenes of “Christmas Past” reflect what it might have been like in Cambridge during the 1850s, including shopping, caroling, and Christmas Eve services. “Christmas Present” peeks into a current home as parents face a pile of gifts needing to be wrapped on Christmas Eve. The gifts come to life as the scissors, paper and ribbons race to beat the clock. Tickets available at the Pritchard Laughlin Civic Center box office.

The Cool Beans Coffee Bar hosts Victorian Tea and Crumpets (with real Devon cream ad a sugar plum) through the day on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from November 17 through January 29, 2007.
