Woman in the Wings / June 2004

Woman in the Wings is a monthly feature about a woman who lives her life
in the spotlight, but behind the scenes, where the applause never seems to reach.
Women in the Wings shine as brightly as any star.
They just never stop working long enough to take a bow.

Gives More

Winston Churchill said it best, “we make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.” No one gives more than Gloria D. Hughes. Just ask her family, friends and co-workers. Gloria works for SW Resources, a private, non-profit corporation in Parkersburg, WV that has been employing individuals with disabilities since 1964.

Gloria greets the morning sunrise each day as she is one of the first to arrive at SW Resources to begin her day in the Mail Plus division.
As she limps across the production area to fill her coffee cup, her friendly personality and smile warms the hearts of those around her. Gloria quickly begins her job duties. She is proud of the active role she plays in Mail Plus, which had a record month in April. Over 332,000 pieces of mail were labeled, inserted and taken to the Post Office.
Gloria is SW Resources oldest client, but she doesn’t let her age slow her down. She is the mother of 10 children, 22 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Like the energizer bunny, she just keeps going and going.

At an early age, she developed multiple sclerosis, which causes her to walk with a limp. Yet, she has managed to care for her family. Five of her children are also victims of MS.
Gloria was recently named the recipient of the Robert Nutter Memorial Award. It is given by SW Resources annually in memory of the late Robert Nutter, WV Division of Rehabilitation District III Supervisor. Nutter believed, “success is not in being the best, but in doing your best.” Hughes is a living example of this motto.

Mark Maze, her supervisor, is quick to praise her for loyalty, dedication, hard work and accepting her disability, all factors for which she was judged for the award.

Gloria also suffers from an asthmatic condition, but even with MS and the breathing problems, she always manages to laugh. With a smile she says, “With all my family needs, keeping busy has never been a problem.”

She lives with her husband Forest on Laurel Creek Road.
