Martha Brown has been designing women for twenty years, outlining and highlighting their features with permanent make-up. A welcome arrival from Colombia, where she first studied and practiced, Martha originally opened Faces by Design in Graysville, Ohio in 2000. Most customers drove over an hour for her sure, skillful cosmetic tattooing. But, in May 2005, she brought her expertise to town, with a new studio in Marietta.
The move gave her the opportunity she had been working toward for years -to share the benefits of what she has learned from research and experience in making women beautiful. She says, “Every woman is beautiful, even though she may not see it herself. But, feeling beautiful is as important as being beautiful. Both can be true.”
In a customized series of skin care treatments she calls New Beginnings, Martha implements the exact techniques and products best suited for each woman’s face, skin condition and expectations.
“Every woman is different, every face is different, every skin is different,” Martha says. “So we design a beauty program for each woman that will give her the long standing results she wants.”
The number of sessions may vary as can the types of treatments.
All New Beginnings sessions include 100% oxygen therapy. “It’s a powerful way to revitalize skin, which is bombarded with harmful sun rays and pollution,” Martha says.
Microdermabrasion is a proven treatment often included in a New Beginnings program. Martha offers the traditional crystal technique, where tiny crystals are sprayed under pressure to remove dried and dead skin, but she also offers the next level of microdermabrasion, particle-free ultrasound. “It also removes the top layer of skin, but the vibrations go deeper and affect more underlayers of skin. It’s an extremely safe, effective way to smooths and refresh the skin,” according to Martha
A variety of chemical peels including the traditional glycolic peel, may also be part of the tailored program. The chemical solution provides a light burn of the top layer of skin, removing sloughed cells and dry skin and leaving fresh, new skin.
Some women are looking for overall anti aging effects, others have a dark spot or two and some come for post-surgical treatments to reduce scarring.
A full line of support products helps women continue to care for their skin at home. Martha has selected French and European skin care products, “for their richer moisturizing qualities. Europeans have a different perspective on beauty. European women have always taken special care of their skin. A woman doesn’t have to be a teen ager to have youthful skin.” She says Europeans also use a greater variety of different natural products that are beneficial to skin. “We have one product that contains caviar!”
Shay Reid, a certified aesthetician has joined Martha in the studio, combining treatments and products to help women achieve the healthy glow that will make them look and feel beautiful.
Always committed to the latest technology in the field, Martha has also added the newest advance in permanent make up. The standard rotary style application is safe, painless, long lasting and she has employed it very successfully for years. But she says, “The new technology is a surgical grade micropigmentation machine with a computerized power unit. The advantage is that it delivers color with almost microscopic precision in half the time and it gives even longer lasting results.”
Since skin does gradually replace itself, the color and intensity of permanent make up can fade over time. For eyebrows and permanent eyeliner, most women come in for a brief touch up after six months, and then annually to maintain their best look. At any time, a second color of eyeliner can be added, an existing color can be intensified or muted, or a shape slightly modified. Martha says, “Many women have their eyebrows done first. Then, they like it so much, they come back for eyeliner. Permanent make-up is so convenient and there’s no worry about smudges or rubbing it off. A woman looks great, even before she gets out of bed!”
Faces by Design is open 9-5, Monday through Friday, and one Saturday each month.
