Shari Messinger has a vocation as well as a business. The empathy and enthusiasm she brings to clients is based on her own experiences with appearance changes that damage a woman’s self esteem. Shari is president and manager of Resolutions 2 in Barboursville, a unique hair and mastectomy boutique that helps women cope successfully with hair loss and breast loss.

Resolutions 2 specializes in hair replacement systems and products and offers a full service salon for clients with problem hair. They carry over 300 wigs plus hair extenders, fashion hair accessories and natural products to regrow lost hair. Shari says, “We offer all kinds of hair and headwear.  We even sell hats with hair!”
They also fit and carry a wide variety of post mastectomy prosthesis, bras and swimwear.

Shari is a good customer herself. Like her mother, and her daughter, she has a genetic condition that causes hair loss. It gives her a very personal understanding of what women are feeling when they come through the door. “Appearance is everything to women. It is how we value ourselves, how we judge ourselves. Even at her very best, a woman will find flaws in how she looks. Chemotherapy or medication or other conditions can be devastating to our self confidence and self esteem.”

She bought Resolutions 2 in 2000. The clientele has grown steadily as Shari has added new services. Though it often causes hair loss, chemotherapy can cause hormone changes that result in the new growth of facial hair. Resolutions 2 offers permanent hair removal using a painless transcutaneous method of electrolysis for small and large areas. Shari says, “Treatments are $35 and it takes several treatments to be effective. But, this is a service any woman can use, since facial hair is a problem for many women.”

The full service salon has been a very successful addition to the shop. “Hair is a major issue for women. When it is a problem, it affects so many things – you can’t get wet, can’t go swimming, can’t get caught in the wind. It’s embarrassing and women feel ashamed even though they’ve done nothing wrong.” At the salon, there is privacy and special help for women struggling with bad hair, integrating hair products, placing hair units and wigs and getting the right hair cut.

Resolutions 2 sells Nioxin, a product that Shari says regrows hair and often can prevent hair loss. She says it has helped her daughter, who shares the alopecia condition, to grow back the hair she had started to lose. Shari, who wears a hair addition that clips on and can be removed at night, says she is regrowing hair with the product, too. She often suggests it for women who are going to begin chemotherapy or other medications that can cause hair loss. “You have to be diligent, but this product prevents chemicals from getting into hair follicles.”

Shari says they see between ten and thirty new clients each month for post mastectomy products. She is a certified fitter for a number of breast form and bra makers and Reflections 2 keeps a range of styles and colors in stock. With almost 2000sq. ft, there is room for both privacy and selection. She tries to make certain each woman receives the personal attention that she deserves.

Shari says everyone should love their work as much as she loves hers. “Women come in, unhappy or unsure, anxious or depressed. It is so gratifying to be able to help, not just a little, but a lot. We help women look better and feel good about how they look.”
